2028 Year 10 John Monash Science School Entry Opportunity Workshop [Edutest]

Sat, 12 Sept, 12:00 pm · 90 min (Melbourne time)

Monash University, ClaytonWellington Rd, Clayton VIC 3800

For students in Year 8 now, Year 9 in 2027

About this workshop

For families whose child is in Year 8 now and is aiming at John Monash Science School for Year 10 entry in 2028. Ninety minutes on this one school: what its exam contains, how the interview works, and what a family should be doing between now and then.

What we cover

  • Who is eligible, when applications open and close, and how to register through Edutest.
  • The five papers JMSS sets: Mathematics, Numerical Reasoning, Science Reasoning, Science Analysis and Reporting, and Science Interest and Communication.
  • What each paper actually asks for, and where students in this cohort usually lose marks.
  • The two science writing tasks, which are the part almost nobody prepares for.
  • The shortlist and the interview: how the school decides, what it asks, and what to bring on the day.

The rough timeline

  • Registrations close about three weeks before the exam.
  • The exam sits in June 2027.
  • Shortlist invitations land about two months after the exam. It is a real wait, not days.
  • Interviews, then offers about three months after the exam, with roughly a week to accept.

The 2028 round dates are not published yet. We will show you the ones JMSS has confirmed and tell you plainly which are still last year's rolled forward.

Who it is for

Students in Year 8 now, Year 9 in 2027, and their parents. Parents are welcome on their own if your child cannot make it.

On the day

Free, at Monash University, Clayton. Ninety minutes. Nothing to bring but questions. The Year 10 Entry Prep Mock runs the next morning at the same venue if you want to see where your child currently sits.

Questions families ask

Is it free?

Yes. Book a ticket on this page and no card is asked for.

We are looking at the other schools too. Do we come to this one or the 10am session?

Both, if you can. The 10am session is the overview: every school that opens Year 10 places, and the rough timeline for each. This one is JMSS only, in detail. They run back to back at the same venue.

Should my child come, or is this for parents?

Either, and both is best. The content is aimed at the person making the decisions, so a parent on their own gets full value. Students in Year 8 now get the most out of the exam and preparation part.

Do we have to do the mock exam as well?

No. The Year 10 Entry Prep Mock the next morning is separate and also free. The workshop tells you how the round works, the mock tells you where your child currently sits, and they are worth more together than apart.
