Online: John Monash Year 10 Entry Deep Dive Workshop
Sat, 17 Oct, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (Melbourne time)
Online (Google Meet)
For students in Year 8 now, Year 9 in 2027
About this workshop
For families whose child is in Year 8 now and is aiming at John Monash Science School for Year 10 entry in 2028. Two hours, live online, on this one school: what its exam contains, how the interview works, and what a family should be doing between now and then.
What we cover
- How the round works: who is eligible, registering through Edutest, and the path from exam to shortlist to interview to offer.
- The three multiple-choice papers, one at a time: Mathematics, Numerical Reasoning and Science Reasoning. What each one assesses, real example questions worked through live, and the strategies that save time on each.
- The two writing papers, step by step. Science Interest and Communication: planning, a clear contention, and body paragraphs built from the passage. Science Analysis and Reporting: why it is a report and not an essay, and what goes in each section.
- How to build science general knowledge in 15 minutes a few times a week, with the sites and channels to start on.
- Exam mindset and scores: when to skip and move on, when to guess, what the Superior band means, and the practice targets to aim for each term.
- After the exam: what the Assessment Centre group task looks like, the interview and the kinds of questions it asks, and which extracurriculars are worth talking about.
- A term-by-term plan from now to the exam in June 2027, then open questions.
It is run by our tutors who went through the John Monash entry process themselves.
The rough timeline
- Registrations close about three weeks before the exam.
- The exam sits in June 2027.
- Shortlist invitations, interviews and offers follow in the months after the exam.
The 2028 round dates are not published yet. We will show you the ones JMSS has confirmed and tell you plainly which are still last year's rolled forward.
Who it is for
Students in Year 8 now, Year 9 in 2027, and their parents. Parents are welcome on their own if your child cannot make it.
How the online session runs
Free, live online, 5pm to 7pm (Melbourne time) on Saturday 17 October. Join from home on a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone. The meeting link arrives in your confirmation email once you book, and it stays on your events page. Nothing to bring but questions.
Questions families ask
Is it free?
Yes. Book a ticket on this page and no card is asked for.
Do we need anything to join?
Just a device with an internet connection and the link from your confirmation email. Bring questions. We will cover the ground either way, but the useful part is usually the specific question about your own child.
Should my child come, or is this for parents?
Either, and both is best. The content is aimed at the person making the decisions, so a parent on their own gets full value. Students in Year 8 now get the most out of the exam and preparation part.
Do we have to do the mock exam as well?
No. The Year 10 Entry Prep Mock Exams are separate and run in person. Your family's first mock with us is free, then $65. The workshop tells you how the round works, the mock tells you where your child currently sits, and they are worth more together than apart.
Also coming up
Families usually do both: the workshop to learn how the round works, the mock exam to find out where they sit.
